[Journal], 1797-1798.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of notes relating to Harper's service on the H.M.S. Bellerophon. The first entry is dated, "Alexandria the 13th of Messidor-the 5th year of the French Republick one and inseparable," and includes articles "signed Bonaparte" which declare that "every village [in Egypt] that shall take up Arms against the Army shall be burnt." The journal also includes descriptions the Battle of the Nile and other naval events in the Mediterranean in 1797 and 1798, five pen and ink maps of the Mediterranean and plans of battle lines, copies of orders, a table of pay for "Inferior Officers and Seamen," an account of a "Substitute for a Rudder as Used in the French Navy" accompanied by a drawing of it, and a description of a substitute rudder invented by Captain Edward Pakenham.
